Nigel Hawke Racing, meet the trainer - Nigel Hawke

With over 40 years of experience in racing, Nigel Hawke has earned a stellar reputation for sourcing and nurturing future talent, both for private owners and the yard’s racing club.

As a Grand National-winning jockey, Nigel knows a thing or two for what it takes to lead great horses across the finish line. Notably, he won the Grand National riding the famed Seagram in 1991.

Tiger Roll - 2x Grand National Winner and now etched into racing history - was discovered by Nigel himself for just £10,000.

“The connection with Tiger Roll has given me as much of a kick as my own victories”

At Thorne Farm, Nigel has developed innovative training techniques on the gallops that have been adopted by trainers across the country.

Nigel’s Hawke Racing-

Throughout his career, Nigel has expertly managed a variety of syndicates, leveraging his extensive experience and warm hospitality to create a new innovative syndicate.

Having more members involved means more people can share the experience and partake in the journey together.

His infectious enthusiasm for the sport and his horses ensures an exceptional experience for both seasoned fans and newcomers alike.

A son of the renowned St. Leger winner, Milan, Ballymagroarty Boy showcases exceptional strength and stamina in jumping, often finding himself in contention as he rounds the final bend.

He began his extensive career over the minimum trip of 2 miles but quickly demonstrated his potential over longer distances, excelling in races up to 3 miles.

His strength in jumping is evident, consistently putting him in the mix during the crucial stages of a race.

Most recent win

In the deep mud at Ffos Las Racecourse, a true test of stamina reflected in the race time. Ballymagroarty Boy stayed near the pace from the outset, effortlessly ploughing through the heavy ground.

His stamina was evident with 3 furlongs to go, as he pushed through to lead convincingly. Despite a mishap with the jockey dropping the whip approaching the last, he powered along to win by 4 and ¾ lengths.

Top 3 17 times in 36 races... and counting...

Ballymagroarty Boy's passion for racing is undiminished, with some of his strongest performances last season earning him a career-best official rating of 123.

His recent run at Haydock, where he beat some smart performers, shows he retains plenty of ability. Another visit to the winner’s enclosure may not be off the cards.

Frequently asked questions

can I expect prize money if my horse wins or places?

This varies by syndicate. As per the British Horseracing Authority's Rules of Racing legislation, 3.5-8% of race winnings go to the jockey and 6-10% to the trainer depending on the finishing position. The rest is distributed according to the syndicate's rules which are detailed in the shareholder agreement. We recommend reading the syndicate's terms carefully.

what do the cards mean?

what is a racing syndicate?

A racing syndicate is a collaborative ownership model where multiple individuals combine their funds to purchase shares in a racehorse. Syndicate members contribute financially towards the initial purchase of the horse and ongoing expenses like training fees, travel costs, and veterinary care. With Equine Sales, all these expenses are conveniently covered in a single upfront payment for the year, with no hidden charges or additional fees.

are there any hidden costs?

We partner with syndicates that are transparent in their obligations. You will find a share price breakdown on the horse listing page (once you clicked on the listing card). The only potential extra costs you might encounter are related to travel and any personal expenses during in-person visits.

what happens at the end of the ownership term agreement?

At the end of the syndicate term, typically the shareholder will have the option to renew the share at a reduced price to continue following the racehorse's career. In some cases, the horse may be retired or sold, a decision usually made by the majority shareholder where shareholders may have the right to vote depending on the terms of their agreement. Typically, shareholders must seek permission from the syndicate before selling their share.
